Steel Wire Rod Supplier for Wire Drawing and Manufacturing

As a steel wire rod supplier, FDSteels provides hot-rolled coils for wire drawing, construction products, fasteners, and industrial manufacturing in multiple diameters and grades.

Performance depends on composition, surface condition, tolerances, coil characteristics, and downstream processing. FDSteels reviews these details before quotation.

What Is Steel Wire Rod?

Steel wire rod is a hot-rolled product supplied in coils. It is used for drawing into smaller-diameter wire or conversion into mesh, fasteners, springs, and other products.
It should not be confused with finished wire, which may already be drawn, annealed, coated, or formed. It also differs from straight round bar used mainly for machining and fabrication.

Available Grades and Diameters

FDSteels supplies steel wire rod according to the confirmed purchase specification and available mill documentation.

Specification Supply Options
Product Form Hot-rolled wire rod in coils
Configuration Plain or deformed, subject to grade and order confirmation
Diameter Range 5.5–12 mm
Available Diameters 5.5, 6.5, 7.2, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 mm, depending on grade
Grades 3SP, 5SP, SAE 1006, SAE 1008, SAE 1012, RSt34, C72D2, SG2, SWRY11, A2, and A3
Surface Condition As-rolled unless otherwise agreed
Coil Weight Mill-dependent and confirmed in the quotation
Standards ASTM, GOST, DIN, or another agreed specification, subject to grade confirmation

Not every grade is available in every diameter. State the grade, standard, diameter, tolerance, coil-weight range, and intended use in the RFQ.

Selecting Wire Rod by Application

Low-carbon grades such as SAE 1006 and SAE 1008 are commonly considered for drawing and products requiring good formability, including wire, nails, mesh, and selected fasteners. SAE 1012 should be evaluated against the required strength and forming process.

Application-specific grades such as SG2 and C72D2 must be ordered against the correct chemical, mechanical, and processing requirements. Welding-wire feedstock, springs, ropes, and high-strength drawn products may require tighter control of composition, surface quality, and drawability.

Deformed A2 or A3 coils serve reinforcement-related requirements and are not substitutes for plain drawing-quality rod. The buyer or downstream manufacturer should confirm final grade selection.

Common Applications

Typical downstream products include:

  • Drawn black or galvanized steel wire
  • Welded wire mesh and reinforcement products
  • Nails, screws, bolts, rivets, and other fasteners
  • Fencing, barbed wire, and general hardware
  • Welding wire and electrode core wire
  • Springs, wire rope, and prestressing products when the specified grade is suitable
  • Deformed reinforcement coils for construction applications

Quality Control and Documentation

ASTM A510/A510M covers general requirements for carbon and alloy steel wire rod; other grades may follow GOST, DIN, JIS, or an agreed specification. State the required standard and edition in the RFQ.

Mill documentation may include heat identification, chemical analysis, dimensions, and mechanical test data. Inspection can cover diameter, ovality, coil condition, surface defects, scale, seams, laps, cracks, and markings. Additional testing can be coordinated before confirmation.

For intensive drawing, define surface-quality requirements because minor defects can affect performance or cause wire breaks.

Packaging and Delivery

Wire rod is supplied in strapped coils. Coil weight, dimensions, tags, and protection depend on the mill and confirmed order.

Shipment planning considers tonnage, coil weight, loading method, destination, schedule, and Incoterm. FDSteels can coordinate logistics through its steel supply services.

Steel Wire Rod Price and Bulk Quotations

Prices are generally quoted per metric ton and depend on grade, diameter, standard, quantity, coil weight, inspection, market conditions, freight, and delivery terms.

For an accurate quotation, provide:

  • Required grade, standard, and intended application
  • Diameter, tolerance, and quantity
  • Plain or deformed configuration
  • Preferred coil-weight range and packing requirements
  • Inspection or documentation requirements
  • Destination, Incoterm, and delivery schedule

A complete specification reduces substitution risk and supports an accurate offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between wire rod and steel wire?

Wire rod is a hot-rolled product supplied in coils. Steel wire is generally produced from wire rod through drawing and may also be annealed, galvanized, coated, or otherwise processed.

2. Which grade is suitable for wire drawing?

The correct grade depends on the finished wire, reduction schedule, required strength, coating, and manufacturing process. SAE 1006 and SAE 1008 are common low-carbon options, but the downstream producer should confirm the specification.

3. What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide the grade, standard, diameter, tolerance, quantity, application, coil requirements, inspection needs, destination, and Incoterm.
